Day 1 :  Edmonton, AB – Whitecourt, AB 
Meet your fellow travel companions and your Tour Guide at Edmonton international airport (book your flight to arrive in Edmonton international airport no later than noon that day). Once all the luggage is gathered, board the bus and head to Whitecourt, a
200 km drive north of the Alberta capital.  Upon arrival at the hotel, check in followed by a succulent welcome dinner in a convivial atmosphere.  Return to the hotel mid-evening. D

Day 2 :  Whitecourt, AB - High Level, AB
Breakfast at the hotel. Travel through the beautiful region of Peace River to admire the provinces’ great resource - agriculture.  Appreciate the vast fields of canola and wheat, and at times, oil wells in the distance. Once in High Level, check in at the hotel and the rest of the evening is at leisure. B

 

Day 3: High Level, AB – Fort Smith, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel. Shortly after your departure, you will reach the 60th parallel north which marks the Albertan and North-West Territories borders.  Stop at the Visitor Information Centre to receive your certificate to commemorate your journey past the 60th
parallel.  Next, head towards the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park for the first stop in this vast Boreal Forest.  You will be amazed by the beauty of Louise Falls, then enjoy a picnic-style lunch under a pavilion. Following lunch, your will have the opportunity to see the third most important water falls in the Territories, the booming Alexandria Falls, which spillover on Hay River.  Following this visit, you will be crossing through the large Wood Buffalo National Park, before arriving at Fort Smith.  Check-in at the hotel and the rest of the day at is leisure. This evening, you will have an opportunity to join an excursion to fly in an aircraft above numerous lakes, legendary salt plains and possibly buffalo herds. (to be confirmed & optional $) B – L

Day 4 : Fort Smith, NWT – Wood Buffalo National Park, NWT - Hay River, NWT 
Breakfast at the hotel.  Discover Fort Smith.  First stop: the Parks Canada visitor centre, where you will learn more about Wood Buffalo national park.  Being Canada’s  largest national park, this natural area was formed in 1922 to preserve the last buffalo herds left in the region.  Following this visit, enjoy a guided tour of Fort Smith.  After an early group luncheon at the hotel, return to Wood Buffalo National Park where we a knowledgeable Parks Canada guide will have you discover the park in detail and answer your questions.  You will discover the salt plains and observe the biggest terrestrial mammal in North America:  The Wood Bison.  This evening, overnight in Hay River, a small community on the south banks of the Great Slave Lake and at the mouth of Hay River.  The hub for the Northwest Territories, Hay River played an important role in the development of the Territories. Day 5 :  Hay River, NWT – Yellowknife, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning, depart to the only city in the N.W.T.: Yellowknife.  On route,  will visit the Kakisa river, the most important tributary of the Mackenzie River, and take a few moments to admire the Kakisa Falls. Next stop is at Fort Providence for lunch before continuing the journey to the capitol of the North-West Territories.  Upon arrival at the hotel, check in and the rest of the evening is at leisure. B

Day 6 :  Yellowknife, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel.  A local guide will introduce you to the main attractions of Yellowknife on a guided tour, topped off with some great views of the capital and Great Slave Lake. Following a lunch break, you will be given a guided tour of the NWT Legislative Assembly, followed by a stop at the Territorial Visitor Centre. Return to the hotel by 2:30 pm and the rest of the afternoon is free. B

Day 7 :  Yellowknife, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel. Full day at leisure to discover Yellowknife or to relax and enjoy the hotel facilities. Possible optional tour $ to go on a private flying excursion on the legendary Buffalo Air aircraft.  Fly over Great Slave Lake, lost villages within the Boreal landscape, sites of exploitation mines, and the seemingly endless expanse of the Great Canadian North.  You can also visit the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre or the Yellowknife Mining and Geological Museum. B

 

Day 8 :  Yellowknife, NWT - Inuvik, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel.  Today, you head to Yellowknife airport for the flight to Inuvik. After disembarking, stop for lunch, followed by a guided tour of the town. Inuvik is located in the territory of the Dene, the first people to settle in what is now the Northwest Territories, who speak Athabascan languages. During your two-part tour (part bus, part walking tour), your local guide will
describe the exciting history of Canada's largest northern municipality, including how to survive the winter in such a northern climate! Then, you will meet a sled dog breeder and his ten or so energetic and friendly companions. The owner will answer questions and tell you about the importance of this mode of transportation in these northern regions. Finally,  stop at the charming Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church, which is shaped like an igloo. Tonight, a group dinner with a local flavor and in a very special place!   B - D

Day 9 :  Inuvik, NWT – Tuktoyaktuk, NWT - Inuvik, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel. Take the new road that now links Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk. Once there, take a guided tour of this coastal village on the Beaufort Sea. You will see the old community refrigerator, an underground space encased in permafrost. Learn about the lifestyle of these people who live simply by fishing and hunting. You will have the chance to dip your big toe in the Arctic Sea!  After your visit to Tuktoyaktuk, you will be treated to a light lunch, including the tasting of traditional local products. Afterwards, a Dene resident will be happy to discuss the lifestyle of his people, now and in the past. Afterwards, take the road back to Inuvik, a distance of approximately 160 km. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon and the rest of the evening is free. B - L

Day 10 : Inuvik, NWT – Yellowknife, NWT
Breakfast at the hotel. Around noon, head to the airport for the flight back to Yellowknife. Once there, transfer to the hotel and the rest of the afternoon is free to relax. This evening, enjoy your last group dinner. B - D

 

Day 11 :  Yellowknife, NWT - Depart
Breakfast at the hotel. Your exploring of the Northwest Territories has come to an end. Transfer to Yellowknife airport for your flight home.  B
